The GRIGRI from Petzl is the assisted-braking belay device so much so that ‘gri-gri’ has become the common name for any similar device. As the GRIGRI is the original gris-gris belay device, you can be assured that there are many years of expertise gone into this piece of passive personal protective equipment.
For rope access workers or indeed anyone who is working at heights (or rock climbing, caving, abseiling etc). A gris-gris works as any normal belay device, allowing you to feed through the rope, take up slack and descend a climber with ease and safety.
Should anything untoward occur – such as your belayer becoming incapacitated – with a GRIGRI you have an extra layer of protection in the event of a fall: the GRIGRI’s auto-braking system will kick in (with any sudden tension in the rope), clamping down on the rope and arresting the fall.
This assisted braking system does not hinder normal belay use, and in fact, some people use this device to climb without a belayer, pulling rope through as they go and utilizing the assisted braking system in the event an accident happens. This is not recommended for an industrial environment, but it is another possibility with a gris-gris belay device.
The Gri Gri from Petzl works with ropes 10 or 11mm in diameter and can be attached to your safety harness or other equipment via a carabiner as normal.
